Rioja Alavesa trip #2 – a photo diary

Here are some of my favourite moments from the trip to Rioja Alavesa on instagram.

I was thrilled to catch up with the Vinisud team again. For more instagrams from beautiful Rioja Alavesa, check out: charliewines (Charlie Arturoala), rockinredblog (Michelle Williams) and thewinesleuth (Denise Medrano).

This week I am in the Basque part of Rioja – #RiojaAlavesa. Driving from Bilbao, it’s higher and cooler here. Very cool to see the Cantabrian mountains, they protect the vines from the Atlantic winds. There is still the humidity – great for vines (but not so much for my hair!) ;-) #winelovers #winelife #RiojaAlavesa #basquecountry #basquewine

Getting the “Vinisud” band back together – on tour of Rioja Alavesa with rock stars @rockinredblog and @thewinesleuth. Later today we are giving a presentation to 100 producers about social media and wine trends with @charliewines chairing the panel (we will also see some of his film – The Duel of Wine) #basquewine #basquecountry #RiojaAlavesa #winelife #winelovers #winegeek #travel #wine

A bottle from the 1950s @valserrano Rioja Alavesa is featured on the label and also the village, Villabuena. Don’t see this as much today. Mostly “Rioja”

Grilling lamb on old vines for lunch. In hilly vineyard of Norberto (Bodeagas Laukate). His parents are a Romeo &Juliet story between Franco and communists. Disinherited; but, his father’s sisters, who were nuns, felt sorry for them and gave them these 5ha #biodynamic #RiojaAlavesa

Whisky! At first I thought this was the mule’s name, as he was calling out, frantically “whisky whisky” but it was saying, GO RIGHT GO RIGHT in Basque. The mule delicately walks around the 90 year old bush vines, which are not planted in a straight line. I found out her name is “Bragada” which, I think, means “brave” or “strong”. Bodegas Gil Berzal do this only 3 times per year, the next time will be in April. Thirsty work!

A few quick Pintxos at the bar with red vermouth & orange. Great to hang out with @charliewines @thewinesleuth this afternoon in Bilbao.
